How to Become a Successful Entrepreneur

Achieve Success as a Small Business Entrepreneur

As a successful online entrepreneur people often remark on how lucky I am or they are suspicious that my more than comfortable lifestyle allows me & my family to go on holiday when we like and also have time to pursue hobbies & interests during the normal course of our working days.

Successful Entrepreneur

Well the reality of being a successful entrepreneur is that it is not about luck at all, in fact many would be entrepreneurs fail dismally, and becoming a successful entrepreneur takes vision, a certain amount of business acumen and lots of drive & perserverance.

So whilst the rewards of being an entreprenuer are often huge, being an entrepreneur isn't the easy, carefree career path that many believe it to be mainly because all your time, capital, passion, creativity & skills are invested in your own business - which isn't without risk & many sleepless nights.

So from the outside a successful entreprenuer can appear to be lucky & not have a care in the world, this is often very far from the truth & reality of being a successful entrepreneur.

6 Steps to Becoming a Successful Entrepreneur

  1. Brainstorm an Idea

  2. Research Your Niche

Just because you think your idea or niche has great potential doesn't necessarily mean anyone will buy it.

It is essential to research your potential market and find out the extent of the demand for what you are offering & how stiff the competition is, ie is there space for your product or service in the market or is the market saturated?

Is your niche's market geographically limited or does it have national or even international appeal?

These marketing issues need to be researched to determine whether your niche will ahve a chance of success.

Many would be entrepreneurs have gone full steam ahead only to find out that their niche market was not viable either due to limited demand or too much in the way of established competition.

  3. Capital

Many a viable venture has hit the skids due to a lack of cash flow.

So it's important to not only write a business plan but to also do a short, medium & long term cash flow projection.

A comprehensive business plan will also assist in seeking investor financing & funding.

  4. Fail to Plan - Plan to Fail

    business plan
In addition to doing a cash flow projection which is part of your business plan, it is important to create a comprehensive plan for your business.

The purpose of this is to help you plan for all eventualities, including your short & medium term objectives as well as your long term vision.

Commiting your thoughts & ideas to writing stimulates the thought process and helps you think of things that need to be incorporated into your overall business concept.

  5. Partners & Associates

Once the capabilities that your business requires have been identified, make sure that the partners or associates that you recruit have the specific skills & track record that is required.

It's also wise to specifically document everyone's tasks or job description as well as salaries and bonuses to avoid any doubt or misconceptions down the line if things turn nasty.

  6. Management of Resources

Many entrepreneurs neglect this part of the business especially if things are running along quite smoothly.

Management of capital equipment & importantly your partners & staff is vital - not only is it essential to keep your finger on the pulse but strong management keeps everyone on their toes.

On the other hand weak management leads to mediocrity and ultimately failure.

  7. Whilst the above may not be a comprehensive list to achieving success as an entrepreneur, it will enable you to set up a viable business with a solid foundation to achieve long lasting success.
